Soave
The village of Soave is located halfway between Vicenza and Verona, just an hour from Venice. It is a small, charming medieval village with intact walls and structure, dominated by one of the most beautiful Scaliger fortresses in the Veneto region. All around, you’ll find the hills and vineyards of the renowned Soave wine.
It has triumphed over many beautiful Italian villages in the competition, surpassing locations like Castelfranco Piandiscò (Arezzo) and Millesimo (Savona), as well as other Alpine, Apulian, and Sardinian wonders. But this place in the Veneto region, in the province of Verona, is truly… Soave! Famous in the region for its panoramas, the Scaliger castle, and its exquisite wines, the village of Soave has now become a well-known tourist destination for all Italians.
The Soave area, near the important Via Postumia, was already inhabited in Roman times and was even recognized as a “rural district.” Some Roman sepulchers with Latin inscriptions from that time still testify to its history. However, its identity as a city began during the barbarian invasions when the Swabians, or Suebi, settled here, giving the village its name “Soave.”
Soave, “the village of villages,” has preserved its history’s beauty thanks to the care of its inhabitants for the heritage of the past. Being a small hillside community with only 7,000 residents has allowed for more attentive preservation of buildings, natural areas, and churches. Today, anyone who chooses to visit Soave will truly see a synthesis of beauty and “life on a human scale” that one expects from a “village of villages.”
