Lazise
Lazise, the first free commune in Italy.
Lazise is a small and charming Italian municipality with nearly seven thousand inhabitants, located on the eastern shore of Lake Garda in the Veneto region, and within the province of Verona. Its geographical location undoubtedly offers a significant advantage, both in terms of landscape and, more importantly, for the excellent mild climate that can be enjoyed throughout the year. The municipality of Lazise also benefits from an important thermal spring (located in Colà, one of the two hamlets, along with Pacengo) and the Canevaworld amusement park, one of the most important on a national scale. It can also boast its proximity to the wonderful and highly renowned Gardaland, an amusement park for both adults and children.
The name of this locality derives from the Latin term “lacus,” which, quite simply, means a lakeside village. This settlement has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the discoveries made here, as well as in neighboring countries, of remains of dwellings built with the typical architecture of that era, namely on stilts. During the Roman era, its prestige grew even further, to the extent that Lazise became an important center (possibly even a capital) for commercial trade, which took place via the lake and involved all the goods coming from Germany and passing through this very place.
Subsequently, under the control of the Veronese Scaligeri family, the walls and the castle were constructed. Unfortunately, these defenses succumbed after a ten-day siege, on October 13, 1387, effectively delivering the city first to the Visconti family and then to the Paduan aristocratic family of the Carraresi.
A stroll through the town is one of the most beautiful experiences offered by the entire Lake Garda. Its picturesque village is a feast for the eyes, and the sun, its colors, delicious food, and its penchant for entertainment, transformations, and future prospects already in motion make the municipality of Lazise one of the best places to visit in the vicinity. It is ideal for families seeking some tranquility and for young people attracted to entertainment and nightlife.
